1) Victims of Papua Landslides, Floods Struggle for Clean Water

Jayapura. Residents are still struggling to get access to clean water after torrential rains caused flooding and landslides in three districts in Papua over the weekend.
Linawati, a resident of Yapis in North Jayapura, complained on Monday that the clean water supply had not been restored since the floods.
“We can’t clean our houses because we can’t do it without clean water,” she said.
Lina said the commercial sector had also come to a standstill because many shops were still covered in mud and dirty water.
“They can’t be cleaned without water. Also, we can’t buy any water from the water trucks because the flood has disrupted their operations,” she added.
Lina expressed hope that the local government could restore the water supply soon.
Floods and landslides caused by heavy rain, left at least 11 people dead, two missing and several injured in the Papua districts over the weekend, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.
“Eleven people died and two are missing,” agency head Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press statement on Sunday, adding heavy rains had been falling since 6:30 p.m. local time on Saturday.
Sutopo said the landslides occurred in three separate districts in the province: North Jayapura, Abepura and South Jayapura, adding that at least 40 houses were damaged while 15 others were severely damaged.
The regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), along with the military, a search-and-rescue team (Basarnas) and volunteers were helping victims to evacuate the area on Monday.
The province has seen several landslides from torrential rain. In January, downpours that have showered Papua for days, resulted in at least five dead and several more injured.
That landslide occurred at an excavation site in Sentani Hawai district.
According to reports, the landslide also buried a number of houses, trapping people inside.
Several days earlier, a similar landslide occurred at the Wajib Senyum compound in South Jayapura, covering several houses in the area.
The tragedy resulted in the deaths of two pregnant women who were buried in the ruins.
Officials helping with the evacuation reportedly rushed the women to the Dr. Soedibjo Sarsdadi Marin Hospital immediately after they were found, but they were pronounced dead on arrival.
